TL;DR

Big brands do not use more schema than everyone else. They publish their company facts once, as organization schema markup on a single page, and keep that record accurate. Google asks for the markup on the home page or one page that describes the organization, not on every page, and lists recommended properties from legalName and logo to identifiers such as leiCode and iso6523Code. Only 7.16% of mobile pages carried Organization markup in the 2024 Web Almanac, so doing it well is still uncommon. The simple version is one page, one accurate record, and a markup type for each thing the company actually offers.

Search engines read plenty of pages that never say plainly who runs the site or what the company does. Large brands close that gap with a short block of code that works like a fact sheet. Organization schema markup is that block. This guide explains what goes in it, where it lives and how to keep it simple, using Google’s documentation and the 2024 Web Almanac.

How common is Organization markup today?

41%
of pages used JSON-LD in 2024, up from 34% in 2022 (Web Almanac 2024)
7.16%
of mobile pages carried Organization markup in the 2024 Web Almanac, against 12.73% for WebSite (Web Almanac 2024)
1 page
is all Google asks for: the home page, or a single page that describes the organization (Google Search Central)

JSON-LD adoption keeps climbing, but most pages still carry no company-level record. The chart shows the four types the Web Almanac reported for mobile pages in 2024.

Share of mobile pages with each JSON-LD type, 2024
WebSite
12.73%
Organization
7.16%
BreadcrumbList
5.66%
LocalBusiness
3.97%

Organization markup sits well behind WebSite, so a clean implementation of organization schema markup is still a way to stand out. It is also one of the smallest jobs in structured data, because it is written once and reused.

What does organization schema markup tell a search engine?

Google says Organization structured data helps it better understand an organization’s administrative details and disambiguate the organization in search results. Some properties work behind the scenes to tell one organization from another, while others can influence visual elements, such as which logo is shown (Google Search Central).

In plain terms, it is the company’s fact sheet in a form a machine can read: the name, the legal name, the logo, how to reach the business, where else it officially appears and the identifiers that separate it from similarly named companies. Google also says the markup can feed details in a merchant knowledge panel and brand profile, such as return policies, addresses and contact information.

Large organizations often have many similar names, subsidiaries and pages that describe them, which is where a clear company record helps most. It is the setting for our enterprise SEO programs for large brands.

Which fields do big brands fill in for organization schema markup?

Google lists these as recommended properties, so none is mandatory. The table groups the ones from Google’s list by the question each answers.

Group Properties from Google’s list What it answers
Name and identity name, legalName, alternateName, logo, url What the company is called, and which logo represents it
Reach address, telephone, email, contactPoint Where the company is and how to contact it
Business identifiers taxID, vatID, leiCode, naics, iso6523Code, globalLocationNumber Which company this is, as distinct from others with similar names
Profile description, foundingDate, numberOfEmployees Basic facts about the company
Commerce policies hasMerchantReturnPolicy, hasShippingService, hasMemberProgram Return, shipping and membership details for merchants
Official profiles sameAs Where else the company officially appears

Start with the first three rows. Add identifiers only where they apply to your company, and leave out any property you cannot keep accurate.

Where does organization schema markup go, and how do you keep it simple?

Google recommends placing the markup on the home page, or on a single page that describes the organization, and says you do not need to include it on every page of the site (Google Search Central). That is what keeps organization schema markup manageable at scale: one block, one place.

Populate that block from one source of truth, such as the company settings in your CMS, instead of typing values into a template. When the legal name or phone number changes, one edit updates the markup. Wiring that into a template is part of our website development with structured data built in.

Then make the markup agree with everything else. The name, address and phone number should match the visible footer, the about page and the official profiles listed under sameAs. A mismatch leaves a search engine with two versions of the same company, which defeats the purpose of the record.

Review the record whenever something changes: a move, a rebrand, a new subsidiary or a new phone number. Organization schema markup goes out of date quietly, because nobody sees it on the page, so keeping it current is routine work in our technical SEO services.

Which markup types should match what the company offers?

The company record says who the business is. Big brands also use the markup type that matches their core offer, and the case studies Google has published are a good illustration. They are old and self-reported, so read the table as examples, not benchmarks.

Brand Markup Reported result Year
Eventbrite Event 100-percent increase in the typical year-over-year growth of traffic from Google Search to event listing pages 2017
ZipRecruiter JobPosting 35% more monthly organic non-branded traffic, and a 4.5x higher Google organic conversion rate than before 2017
Rakuten Recipe 2.7x more traffic from search engines and a 1.5x increase in session duration 2018

The pattern is the useful part: an events company marks up events, a jobs board marks up jobs and a recipe site marks up recipes. For most businesses the equivalent is Product, Service or LocalBusiness. Schema.org defines LocalBusiness as a more specific type of Organization (Schema.org), so a multi-location company can describe the company once and each location separately.

Use only the types that fit. A company that sells products and also offers services can mark up each page with the type that matches it, while the organization record on the home page stays the same.

What does the evidence not show?

The Web Almanac measures what appears on crawled pages, not whether it works, and the type shares quoted here are for mobile pages. The Google case studies are from 2017 and 2018, were published by Google, and cover rich result types such as Event, JobPosting and Recipe, not organization schema markup. Google describes the Organization markup as a way to disambiguate and influence elements such as the logo, and no source here shows a ranking effect or a change in AI answers.

What is Skyfield’s position: one page, one accurate record?

Treat organization schema markup as a fact sheet, not a tactic. Publish it once on the home page or an about page, fill in only what you can keep accurate, match it to what the site and your official profiles say, and then add the markup type that fits what you sell. That is the version large brands run, and it is the version that survives a rebrand. Brand facts that agree everywhere are also the base of our GEO services for consistent brand facts. Frequently Asked Questions

What is organization schema markup?

Organization schema markup is structured data, usually JSON-LD, that describes a company: its name, logo, contact details, official profiles and identifiers. Google says it helps understand the organization’s administrative details and disambiguate it in search results.

Where should organization schema markup go?

Google recommends the home page, or a single page that describes the organization. You do not need to include it on every page of the site.

Which properties should I include in organization schema markup?

Google lists its properties as recommended, so none is mandatory. Start with name, legalName, url, logo, contact details and sameAs, then add identifiers such as taxID or leiCode only where they apply to your company.

Does organization schema markup improve rankings?

Google describes it as a way to understand and disambiguate your organization, with some properties influencing visual elements such as the logo. Its documentation does not describe a ranking boost.

Do I need Organization markup if I use LocalBusiness?

Schema.org defines LocalBusiness as a more specific type of Organization, so a single-location business can use LocalBusiness. A multi-location company can describe the company with Organization and each location with LocalBusiness, which is the approach we use.
