TL;DR

The AI visibility metrics worth tracking are mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, and sentiment, each measured as a rate across many repeated answers instead of a single result. One answer from ChatGPT or Google tells you almost nothing, because the brand list changes nearly every time the question is asked. Pair the rate with Search Console and your own lead data, and report it with a margin of error.

A founder asks ChatGPT for the best vendor in her category, sees her company listed third, and screenshots it for the team. Ten minutes later a colleague asks the same question and her company is missing. Both screenshots are real, and neither one is a measurement. That gap between a screenshot and a measurement is the reason AI visibility metrics need a different method than the rank checks most marketing teams grew up with.

Why does one AI answer tell you so little?

Classic rank tracking works because a Google results page for a given query is fairly stable. AI answers are generated fresh each time. A SparkToro study with Gumshoe.ai collected 2,961 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, and Google AI, using hundreds of volunteers in November and December 2025. For the 12 brand recommendation prompts that were each run 60 to 100 times per platform, ChatGPT and Google returned the same list of brands less than 1 in 100 times, and the same list in the same order less than 1 in 1,000 times (Search Engine Journal, January 2026).

The same study found something useful. Even when 142 people wrote their own headphone prompts and the wording barely overlapped, a handful of well known brands still appeared in 55 to 77 percent of responses. In other words, the order of a list is noise, while how often a brand appears across many answers is a stable signal. The study is not peer reviewed and one of its authors sells AI tracking software, so treat it as strong evidence about direction rather than a precise law.

That finding shapes everything below. A rate across many answers is one of the AI visibility metrics that holds up. A position in one answer is an anecdote. If you want a one-time snapshot of where you stand today, our guide to auditing your AI search presence in three steps covers that. This article covers the ongoing version.

Which AI visibility metrics actually matter?

Vendors use slightly different names for AI visibility metrics, so start by fixing definitions inside your own team. Semrush, for example, defines share of voice as the percentage of mentions your brand receives in AI-generated answers compared with competitors, and it separates mentions, which count brand appearances, from citations, which count answers that link your domain as a source (Semrush Knowledge Base). Those two ideas are the backbone of any AI citation tracking setup.

Metric What it counts Best used for Main weakness
Mention rate Share of tracked answers that name your brand Awareness in category and comparison prompts A mention can be neutral or even negative
Citation rate Share of answers that cite a page on your domain Showing which of your pages AI engines trust Some engines cite rarely, so rates differ by platform
AI share of voice Your mentions divided by all tracked brand mentions Competitive position over time Depends on who you chose to track
Average position Where your brand sits when a list appears Spotting large moves only Order changes almost every run
Sentiment Tone of the language around your brand Catching wrong or outdated claims Needs human review to trust

Of the five AI visibility metrics, mention rate and citation rate are the ones to put in front of leadership first. They answer two different questions. Mention rate tells you whether the model knows you exist for a given need. Citation rate tells you whether your own content is doing the persuading. A brand can be mentioned often because of third party reviews while its own pages are never cited, which is a signal about where to invest next.

How many prompts and runs does a stable reading need?

There is no universal number for AI visibility metrics, and the honest research says so. A July 2026 preprint summarized by Search Engine Journal tested 30 platform and topic combinations across SearchGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. A reliable ranking needed between 33 and 94 cited answers depending on the test, three of the 30 tests never stabilized even at 125 questions, and a top ten site’s typical margin of error was about five positions (Search Engine Journal, July 2026). The author co-founded an AI visibility software company, and the paper has not been peer reviewed.

A vendor guide from cloro.dev gives a practical rule of thumb. Around 72 answers gives a visibility rate within roughly 10 percentage points at a 25 percent rate, and around 300 answers narrows that to about 5 points (cloro.dev, 2026). The author calls the figures indicative, so use them to set expectations, not as a standard.

The practical takeaway for AI visibility metrics is that answers collected equals prompts, times runs per prompt, times platforms. Ten prompts run once on one platform is ten answers, which is far too few to trust. Our SEO and GEO plans track 10 prompts on Launch, 25 on Growth, 50 on Authority, and 100 or more on Scale, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. Whatever provider you use, including us, ask how many repeated runs sit behind each reported number.

Where do AI engines get the sources they cite?

Among all AI visibility metrics, citation rate only helps if you know what earns citations. Ahrefs analyzed 863,000 keywords and about 4 million Google AI Overview URLs and found that 38 percent of cited pages also ranked in the top ten for the same query, down from 76 percent in an earlier July 2025 study (Search Engine Journal, March 2026). Ahrefs notes that better parsing means the two datasets are not directly comparable, so part of the drop may be better detection. Either way, ranking well on Google no longer guarantees a citation.

Peec AI, a tracking vendor, ranked roughly 30 million cited sources across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, and Forbes held the top five spots, followed by G2, Yelp, Facebook, Medium, and TechRadar (Peec AI, March 2026). The list gives rank only, not percentages. It does suggest that third party profiles, reviews, and community discussion carry real weight, which is why we explain how AI search engines select sources in more depth.

What can Search Console and analytics tell you?

Search Console gives less than most teams hope for when it comes to AI visibility metrics. Google states that traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the Web search type, so there is no separate filter to isolate it (Google Search Central). Google also says clicks from pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, but it publishes no data to support that claim.

1%
of visits included a click on a link inside the AI summary itself (Pew)
58%
lower average click through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs, correlation)

Pew Research tracked 900 U.S. adults and 68,879 searches in spring 2025, and Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords using desktop Search Console data in a study dated February 2026 (Pew Research Center; Ahrefs). Both describe correlation, and AI features have kept changing since. The point for measurement is simple. Many AI influenced decisions never produce a click, so a visibility rate has to be read next to branded search demand and direct inquiries, not instead of them.

What does a practical AI visibility measurement setup look like?

Build a prompt set that mirrors the buying journey

Good AI visibility metrics start with the prompt set, so group prompts by stage: broad category questions, comparison and alternatives questions, pricing questions, and questions that name your brand directly. Write them the way customers talk, not the way your keyword tool spells them. For B2B companies, add the questions each member of the buying committee would ask, since B2B search behavior involves several people researching separately.

Run it on a schedule and keep every answer

Run the full set for your AI visibility metrics on every platform at a fixed cadence, such as monthly, with repeated runs per prompt. Store the raw answers, not only the scores, so you can review sentiment and spot inaccurate claims about your pricing, services, or locations.

Report a rate with a range

As an illustration only, not a benchmark, imagine 40 prompts run 5 times on 3 platforms, which is 600 answers. If your brand appears in 150 of them, your mention rate is 25 percent, and a simple statistical margin is roughly plus or minus 3.5 points. Because repeated runs of the same prompt are not fully independent, the true uncertainty is wider. Showing the range around your AI visibility metrics keeps the team from celebrating or panicking over small month to month moves.

Tie the numbers to business outcomes

Connect your AI visibility metrics to Search Console impressions, branded search volume, referral traffic from AI platforms, and how new leads say they found you. That is the same discipline we describe in our piece on transparent SEO reporting, applied to a new channel.

How does Skyfield Digital approach AI visibility measurement?

Every Skyfield plan combines SEO and GEO, and tracking AI visibility metrics through AI prompt tracking is part of the monthly work rather than a bolt on. Launch includes an AI Visibility Baseline Report, Growth adds a monthly AI Answer Gap Report, and Authority adds a quarterly AI Share of Voice Report, all as listed on our pricing page. The aim is to show which prompts you win, which you lose, and which pages should change, using the approach outlined in our methodology.

If you want to see where your brand stands today across the major assistants, our team can run a baseline and walk through it with you. Start with generative engine optimization from Skyfield Digital or request a free audit from the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What are AI visibility metrics?

They are measurements of how often and how favorably AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI features mention or cite your brand. The core set is mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, average position, and sentiment, each calculated across many repeated answers.

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention means your brand name appears in an AI answer. A citation means the answer links to or sources a page on your domain. A brand can be mentioned without being cited when the model relies on third party sources, and the reverse can also happen.

How is AI share of voice calculated?

Share of voice compares your brand mentions with the mentions of every brand you chose to track across the same set of prompts. Semrush describes it as the percentage of mentions your brand receives compared with competitors in your market. The result depends heavily on which competitors and prompts you include.

Why do AI answers change every time I ask?

Generative models produce each answer fresh, and small differences in wording or context can change which brands appear. In the SparkToro study, the same brand list came back less than 1 percent of the time. That is why averages across many runs are more reliable than any single answer.

How many prompts should I track?

Research does not give a single number. Studies suggest dozens of cited answers per prompt topic at minimum, and vendor guidance points to several hundred answers per reporting period for a margin of about 5 points. Start your AI visibility metrics with a prompt set that reflects each stage of the buying journey and repeat each prompt several times.

Can I see AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Only in combination with other traffic. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate filter. Use branded search trends, referral data, and lead source questions to understand the wider effect.

How often should I review AI visibility metrics?

Monthly works for most businesses, with a quarterly review of share of voice and source patterns. Weekly numbers on a small prompt set swing too much to guide decisions.
