A Direct Update for Our Clients
Skyfield Digital is removing forum seeding from every GEO plan we offer, effective immediately. If you are a current client, nothing about your investment changes. The deliverable is being replaced with authority source placement, which produces better results and carries none of the risk.
We want to explain why openly, because this tactic is still being sold across the industry and it is worth understanding exactly what changed.
What Reddit Seeding for GEO Actually Is
Reddit seeding is the practice of planting posts and comments that read like genuine user opinion but were written to promote a brand. The target audience is not human readers. The target is the large language model that will later scrape that thread and repeat the sentiment as if it were independent advice.
The logic was simple. AI systems pull heavily from community discussion. If you shape the discussion, you shape the answer.
For roughly two years, that logic held.
Why Reddit Became a GEO Target in the First Place
Reddit spent 2024 and 2025 as one of the most heavily cited domains in AI search. Independent citation studies ranked it first for Google AI Overviews and Perplexity and in the top two for ChatGPT. At one point Reddit accounted for 21 percent of citations among the ten most-cited sources in Google AI Overviews.
Both OpenAI and Google signed content licensing deals with Reddit, which fed its threads directly into the systems answering your customers’ questions.
That combination made Reddit the obvious pressure point. Marketers noticed, and Reddit seeding for GEO became a standard line item across the industry, including on our own pricing pages.
What Changed in 2026
Three things happened, and together they closed the window.
Reddit Now Uses AI to Catch Coordinated Marketing
On July 6, 2026, Reddit published an update on how it is policing manipulation in the AI era. Its improved automated systems caught roughly 25,000 spammy posts and comments per day during the first quarter of 2026, and it reported cutting user exposure to that content by 20 percent compared with the prior three months.
The method matters more than the number. Reddit is no longer matching keywords or blocking address ranges. In its own words, it now uses large language models to catch the highly subtle, coordinated patterns of fake behavior and artificial hype that older systems once missed. Repeated phrasing, thin account histories, and clusters of enthusiastic replies arriving together are precisely the fingerprints that seeding leaves behind.
Reddit did not use the term generative engine optimization in that announcement. Bloomberg and Axios both framed the crackdown as a direct response to it, and the timing is hard to read any other way.
ChatGPT Stopped Citing Reddit at Scale
In mid August 2026, Reddit’s share of the sources cited by ChatGPT Search collapsed. According to monitoring platform Promptwatch, Reddit averaged 3.83 percent of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7, then fell below 1 percent on August 14 and averaged 0.52 percent through August 17. That is a decline of roughly 86 percent in four days. Forbes, Axios, and Search Engine Land all covered it.
OpenAI has not explained the change, and Promptwatch has been careful to note that its data shows when the drop happened, not why. Treat the exact size as provisional. Treat the direction as the lesson.
That lesson should concern any business paying for Reddit marketing for AI search. Even when seeding worked, the visibility it purchased sat on a foundation the buyer did not control, could not predict, and could not appeal. Reddit’s own chief communications officer publicly warned brands against treating the platform as a way to hack their presence on an AI platform.
The Community Polices It Too
Detection is not only automated. Reddit users are unusually good at spotting manufactured enthusiasm, and moderators act quickly. Repeated phrasing, brand new accounts, and several glowing replies arriving in the same hour are visible to any regular member of a subreddit.
When astroturfing gets caught in public, the damage is not a removed comment. It is a permanent, searchable thread about a brand that paid for fake opinions. That thread then becomes part of what AI systems retrieve and summarize about that brand for years afterward.
Four Reasons Reddit Seeding for GEO Fails
- Detection has outpaced execution. Reddit is now using the same class of technology that made seeding attractive in order to find and remove it.
- The output is unstable. A single change to how one AI platform retrieves sources can erase months of work without notice.
- The downside is asymmetric. A successful seed produces a modest, temporary lift. A caught seed produces a permanent reputational liability.
- It builds nothing you own. Seeded content is rented visibility on someone else’s property, governed by rules that owner can rewrite at any moment.
What Replaces It in Every GEO Plan
Every Skyfield GEO plan now includes authority source placement in place of forum pieces, at the same count and the same price.
Authority source placement means earning brand mentions on sources that AI systems already treat as credible and that will still be credible next quarter. Industry publications. Expert roundups. Vetted directories. Review platforms. Named-author coverage where a real person with real credentials is on record saying something about your business.
This work moves slower than posting a comment. It is also durable, defensible, and compounding. The brands consistently cited by AI today are the ones with genuine on-record presence across trusted sources, not the ones with the loudest manufactured enthusiasm.
The rest of our methodology is unchanged. Technical GEO, schema and entity optimization, structural GEO, AI-optimized content, GEO internal linking, and monthly LLM topic tracking all continue exactly as before. Our SEO work keeps feeding AI visibility, because the crawlability, authority, and topical depth that earn organic rankings are the same signals that make a page worth citing. Our website development team keeps building the fast, crawlable, schema-ready foundation that both search engines and language models require. Our social media management keeps brand messaging consistent across the public surfaces those models read.
So, Is Reddit Seeding Effective for GEO?
No. Reddit seeding for GEO does not survive contact with how AI search actually works in 2026, and the gap is widening every quarter.
There is a legitimate version of community presence, and it deserves to be named clearly. A real brand account that answers questions honestly, discloses who it is, and adds value over months can genuinely help your visibility. That is participation, and it is a communications discipline rather than a purchasable GEO deliverable.
What does not work is manufacturing consensus at volume. That is the practice we are retiring, and we would rather tell you directly than quietly keep billing for it.
The Bottom Line
Reddit seeding for GEO was a real tactic that produced real results for a real period of time. That period has ended. Detection improved, citation patterns shifted, and the risk profile inverted.
Skyfield Digital builds strategies designed to hold up when platforms change, because platforms always change. The work that wins AI visibility now is the same work that wins trust anywhere else. Publish content worth citing, earn mentions from sources worth trusting, and make your site easy for machines to read.
If your current provider still has forum seeding on the invoice, the fair question to ask is what happens to your brand when it gets caught.
