A fair SEO and GEO retainer is measured by monthly output, not by the price alone. Independent surveys put most SEO retainers under $2,000 a month, with agency averages near $3,000, but they do not standardize what each tier includes. Compare proposals by content volume, backlinks, pages optimized, AI prompts tracked, and reporting, and expect results over several months, not weeks.
A business owner collects three proposals. One is $1,500 a month, one is $3,500, and one is $8,000. Each promises more traffic, better rankings, and now visibility in AI answers. None of them lists the same deliverables in the same way, so the owner picks by gut feel. That is the most common way companies end up overpaying or under buying, and it is why a clear view of what a good SEO and GEO retainer includes matters before the first sales call.
What do SEO retainers typically cost?
The best public data comes from vendor-run surveys, so read it as a market snapshot, not a rate card. SE Ranking, working with Duda, surveyed 170 agencies and added pricing data from 90 more in its agency directory, for 260 in total. About 64 percent charged under $1,000 a month, 20 percent charged $1,000 to $2,000, 13 percent charged $2,000 to $5,000, and 2 percent charged more than $5,000 (SE Ranking, updated February 2026). The publisher notes the sample may not reach statistical significance, and 78 percent of respondents had fewer than ten staff.
Who you hire shifts the number. In the same survey, 22 percent of agencies in the U.S. and Canada charged more than $2,000 a month, compared with 9 percent in Europe, and among agencies with 25 or more employees, over 70 percent charged more than $1,000. Ahrefs surveyed several hundred providers in 2023 and updated the page in 2024. It found an average near $2,917 a month overall, about $3,209 for agencies, about $3,250 for consultancies, and about $1,349 for freelancers (Ahrefs SEO pricing survey). That page has internal inconsistencies in its sample size and is older, so treat the averages as a rough guide.
One more pattern is worth knowing about any SEO and GEO retainer. Retainers are the dominant model. SE Ranking found that 53 percent of agencies prefer monthly retainers over any other pricing model, and Ahrefs found 78.2 percent of providers offer them, ahead of per-project and hourly work. If you are weighing a retainer against hiring staff, our comparison of in-house SEO versus an agency covers the cost side.
Why does price alone tell you so little?
Because the market has no shared definition of an SEO and GEO retainer package. SE Ranking found that 85 percent of agencies bundle services into SEO packages, yet its own report does not list what those packages contain, and we could not find an independent survey that standardizes deliverables by price. Two $3,000 retainers can differ by tens of thousands of words of content or by a full channel of work.
That is why we publish monthly output instead of vague service lists. Every plan on our pricing page states the content words, backlinks, pages optimized, internal links, keywords, competitors, and AI prompts included each month. Ask any provider for the same table before comparing prices.
What does each budget level buy?
Here is how a combined SEO and GEO retainer scales on our plans as of October 2026. Prices are monthly, and the content figure is words of SEO and GEO content.
| Plan | Price | Content | Backlinks | AI prompts tracked | Pages optimized | Internal links |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | $1,500 | 14,000 words | 4 | 10 | 4 | 15 |
| Growth | $2,500 | 24,000 words | 7 | 25 | 6 | 20 |
| Authority | $3,500 | 35,000 words | 10 | 50 | 8 | 25 |
| Scale | $5,000 to $10,000 | 52,000 to 112,000 words | 15 to 30 | 100 to 225 | 10 to 15 | 30 to 55 |
Launch at $1,500: a working foundation
Launch suits a smaller site that needs steady content and clean fundamentals. This SEO and GEO retainer includes about seven articles a month, four pages optimized, 50 keywords tracked, three competitors monitored, Google Business Profile optimization, llms.txt setup, and an AI visibility baseline report. For many small business SEO programs, this is where the work starts.
Growth at $2,500: more coverage and AI reporting
The Growth SEO and GEO retainer adds two content refreshes a month, a monthly AI answer gap report, and comparison pages built for AI citations. It roughly doubles the tracking, with 25 prompts, 150 keywords, and five competitors monitored.
Authority at $3,500: category ownership
The Authority SEO and GEO retainer adds four refreshes a month, unlinked brand mention reclamation, and a quarterly AI share of voice report, with about 17 articles, 10 backlinks, and 300 keywords tracked. It fits businesses competing for a whole category.
Scale from $5,000 to $10,000: multi-market output
The Scale SEO and GEO retainer starts at $5,000 and moves up in $1,000 steps. Each step adds 12,000 words of content, 3 backlinks, 25 prompts tracked, 1 more page optimized, and 5 more strategic internal links. It also includes multi-location and multi-market support and priority turnaround, which suits enterprise SEO programs and brands spread across regions.
What should every retainer include, whatever the price?
Some items in any SEO and GEO retainer should not be upsells. Every Skyfield plan includes a technical SEO and GEO audit, a live dashboard with monthly reporting, schema and structured data, keyword, prompt, and content strategy, AI brand perception monitoring, Google Business Profile optimization, llms.txt and AI crawler setup, and a dedicated strategist. We also do not lock clients into long-term contracts. If a proposal leaves out reporting or asks for a long commitment with no output table, that is worth questioning.
Compare retainers by what gets produced each month, then by who is accountable for it.
Output volume is only half of the picture. Quality control matters just as much, so ask how drafts are researched and fact checked, how keywords are chosen, and how pages are prioritized. A smaller retainer with sharp targeting often beats a larger one that spreads content across topics nobody searches for. The same logic applies to backlinks, where relevance and editorial standards matter more than the monthly count.
How long before a retainer starts to pay off?
An SEO and GEO retainer pays off slower than most owners expect. Google says some changes take effect in hours while others can take several months, and it advises waiting a few weeks to judge a change (Google SEO Starter Guide). Ahrefs studied one million random pages and found only 1.74 percent of newly published pages reached Google’s top ten within a year, and the average page ranking first was about five years old (Ahrefs). That study covers new pages across all sites, not pages inside an active campaign, but it shows why patience is part of the budget.
Competitive terms can take six to twelve months, according to our own experience stated on the pricing page. Our guide to how long SEO takes to work goes deeper on what to expect in each phase.
How does GEO change what a retainer should cover?
An SEO and GEO retainer adds work that classic SEO retainers rarely included: tracking prompts across AI assistants, building pages designed to be cited, and monitoring how models describe your brand. SE Ranking found that 61 percent of agencies plan to add AI optimization, 43 percent inside existing offerings and 18 percent as a separate service, and those with finalized pricing charge or plan to charge an average of $937 a month for it. The subset size was not published, so the figure is directional.
We sell the two together because they share inputs. Strong rankings and backlinks help AI platforms trust a site, and content written to answer questions tends to rank as well. Running them as one plan means one strategy and one monthly price. You can read more about our generative engine optimization services and our SEO services.
What should you ask before signing a retainer?
Before you sign an SEO and GEO retainer, ask for the monthly output in writing, including words of content, backlinks, pages optimized, and AI prompts tracked. Ask who writes and edits the content, how many repeated runs sit behind any AI visibility number, and what the reporting dashboard shows. Ask what happens if you want to stop. Google also advises walking away from anyone who guarantees a first-place ranking, so be wary of guarantees.
If you want a proposal that states its output plainly, see our reasons clients choose Skyfield or request a free audit from the contact page. We will recommend the plan that fits your goals, and tell you if a smaller one will do.
