TL;DR

Local service business SEO works by winning the Google Maps factors you control and offsetting the ones you cannot. In Whitespark’s 2026 expert survey, the primary Google Business Profile category is the top local pack factor, and two address-related factors in the top ten favor businesses with a public address. AI recommendations lean on the same assets: Yext found that 86% of 6.8 million AI citations came from websites, listings and other sources brands already control.

A plumber, an electrician or a roofer does not get to rank the way a storefront does. The customer rarely visits, the address is often a home or a yard, and the map pack still decides who gets the call. This guide covers what drives local service business SEO on Google Maps, how service areas work, and what AI assistants appear to pull from when they recommend one. It does not repeat how assistants resolve a search with no location, which we cover separately.

What does the data show about Google Maps ranking?

227
weighted score for the primary Google Business Profile category, the top local pack factor in a survey of 47 local search experts (Whitespark, 2026)
86%
of 6.8 million AI citations came from sources brands already control, such as websites and listings (Yext, 2025)
32%
of consumers look for reviews written in the last two weeks, up from 20% a year earlier (BrightLocal, 2026)

Whitespark’s 2026 report asked 47 local search experts to score 187 factors. Read it as informed consensus rather than measured Google weights, but the ranking is useful for local service business SEO because it shows where the weight sits.

Why do service-area businesses start behind in local service business SEO?

Two of the ten factors favor businesses with a public address: a physical address in the city of search (213) and an address showing on the profile instead of hidden as a service-area business (176). A contractor who works from a home office and drives to customers loses ground on both before any optimization starts.

Google’s guidance sets the boundaries. A profile can list up to 20 service areas, the overall area should not stretch more than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based, and a business that does not serve customers at its address should remove the address and enter only a service area (Google Business Profile Help). The tradeoff is real rather than a mistake to fix. A home-based service business should not show an address customers never visit just to chase one ranking factor.

Factor Score What a service business can do
Primary category 227 Pick the most specific category Google lists, such as the trade itself, instead of a broad one.
Keywords in business title 223 Use the real-world name only. Google’s guidelines list service information among the things a name must not include.
Open at time of search 189 Keep hours exact, including after-hours and emergency availability.
High Google ratings 181 Ask every customer after every job, the same way.
Additional categories 173 Add a few that describe services you actually sell, not one per task.
Reviews with text 170 Keep a steady flow so recent reviews always exist.
Address factors 213 and 176 With no public address, offset with a precise service area and strong service pages.

Where does local service business SEO work go first?

Start with the category, since in local service business SEO it carries the highest score. Google’s guidance is to select a specific primary category, with the example of choosing “Nail salon” instead of “Salon,” and to avoid selecting a category for every product or service (Google Business Profile Help). For a service business that means the trade itself as primary, then a few additional categories for services you really sell.

Reviews are the factor you can move fastest, and recency matters. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 74% of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months, and 32% in the last two weeks. A burst of reviews followed by silence reads as old. Google’s policy prohibits discouraging negative reviews, selectively soliciting positive ones, and offering incentives, and it lists asking staff to solicit a certain number of reviews among the violations (Google Maps Help). The safe system asks every customer the same way after every job.

Profile work and website work reinforce each other, which is how our local service business SEO programs are built.

What do AI recommendations pull from?

Yext analyzed 6.8 million AI citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity from July 1 to August 31, 2025. Websites made up 44% of citations, listings 42%, and reviews and social content 8%, and for unbranded objective queries, first-party websites and local pages made up nearly 60% (Yext, 2025).

A smaller test points the same way. BrightLocal ran 20 searches across 10 industry niches on four AI platforms in July 2025. ChatGPT used business websites as a source 58% of the time, Yelp appeared in 33% of all searches, and Google’s AI models prioritized Business Profile listings (BrightLocal, 2025).

For local service business SEO, the practical reading is that the pages and listings you control do most of the work. Give each service you sell and each area you really serve a page with real detail, and keep names, phone numbers and hours identical everywhere. Pages that only swap the city name are the pattern Google’s spam policies call doorway abuse (Google Search Central). For how assistants handle searches that carry no location, see how assistants resolve a question with no device location.

What does the evidence not show?

Four caveats apply to local service business SEO research. Whitespark’s scores are expert opinion, not Google’s published weights. Yext sells listings software and drew its data from client and prospect locations, so its mix of sources may not match the open web. BrightLocal’s AI test covered only 20 searches. And AI answers vary by prompt and by day, so any single result can mislead.

Skyfield’s read: in local service business SEO, keywords in the business title score 223, but chasing it puts the profile at odds with Google’s name rules, and the profile is the asset the other 186 factors depend on. Our SEO and GEO case studies show how profile and website work combine for real clients.

What is Skyfield’s position: win the profile first, then give AI something to quote?

For the first 30 days, fix the profile before touching anything else. Set the most specific primary category, add a few honest additional ones, define the service area within Google’s limits, and make the hours exact. Then start the same review request after every job. That is the highest-value work in SEO for service area businesses and costs almost nothing.

Next, local service business SEO moves to the website: build or rewrite a page for each core service and each area you actually serve, with real project detail, pricing context and local conditions. Make every name, phone number and hour match the profile and your listings.

Because AI answers draw on the same websites and listings, the work doubles up. Keeping them consistent is the base of GEO for local service businesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do local service businesses rank on Google Maps?

Local service business SEO means winning the factors you control: a specific primary category, accurate hours, a steady flow of recent reviews and a clearly defined service area. The primary category is the top local pack factor in Whitespark’s 2026 expert survey.

Should a service business show its address on Google?

Only if you serve customers there. Google says a business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it and enter only a service area. Experts score a visible address higher, so offset that gap with service pages and a precise service area.

How many service areas can I list?

Up to 20. Google also says the overall area should not stretch more than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based.

How do I get recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini?

Local service business SEO now includes keeping your website and listings accurate and consistent, since 86% of 6.8 million AI citations in Yext’s study came from sources brands control. Build service and area pages with real detail instead of swapped city names.

How many reviews does a service business need?

No fixed number is documented. Recency matters: 32% of consumers look for reviews from the last two weeks and 74% from the last three months (BrightLocal, 2026). Ask every customer the same way and avoid incentives.
